Ipoh trader faces up to 3 years for rabbit neglect [WATCH]

IPOH: A 43-year-old trader was charged in the Sessions Court here today for failing to feed his rabbits, resulting in the death of one of them.

However, the accused, Shairazi Jamal Hatun, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Judge Azizah Ahmad.

According to the charge sheet, the man was accused of negligence in providing food and drink for his two pet rabbits, causing one to die and the other to become severely emaciated.

He allegedly committed the offence at a petting zoo in Jalan Simpang Pulai, Kampung Kepayang, near here, at 11am on June 9 last year.

He was charged under Subsection 29(1)(d) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which carries a penalty of a fine between RM20,000 and RM100,000, or a maximum prison term of three years, or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution was led by Veterinary Services Department (JPV) Prosecuting Officer Roziman Awang Tahrin, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

The court set Nov 28 for mention.
