[UPDATED] Govt closely monitoring 20 potentially deviant teachings nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is monitoring 20 potentially deviant teachings nationwide, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings is not the only one that is under scrutiny.

"We are also closely monitoring eight teachings nationwide. Twelve others are under surveillance and investigation."

He also said that giving an assurance to end deviant teachings may be "beyond the department's power".

However, robust efforts are being made to preserve the faith, he said in response to Datuk Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu).

Earlier, Zulkifli said a national steering committee on addressing deviant teachings has been activated.

It is chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.

"We are also looking at other aspects, namely rehabilitation and prevention. On Oct 1, we held a meeting with the state Islamic religious councils and state Islamic departments, chaired by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department director.

"We also consider zakat assistance, rehabilitation centres and modules. God willing, we have developed a solid framework to address and manage faith issues in Malaysia," he said.
