KUALA LUMPUR: There are no natural risks of sinkholes in Klang, Selangor, as the area is not underlain by limestone, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ground in Klang is made up of marine clay rather than limestone.
He said sinkholes in Klang are typically caused by non-natural factors including pipe leaks, drainage system issues and localised embankment structure failures.
Nanta was responding to a question from V. Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) on plans to prevent sinkholes in Klang.
Nanta said the ministry is responsible for the maintenance of federal roads, including those in Klang.
"The ministry has established guidelines for the installation of utilities along federal roads," he said on sinkholes caused by pipe leaks.
"The installation of utilities must comply with the guidelines and technical requirements issued by the Public Works Department, along with regular monitoring and maintenance."
