KULAI: Police arrested two men in connection with a suspected arson incident involving fireworks that set a house ablaze in Taman Putri here on Wednesday.
The incident resulted in an estimated RM510,000 in damages.
The men, a 30-year-old local and a 23-year-old foreigner, are believed to be responsible for setting the house along Jalan Riputri 12/10 on fire using fireworks.
District police chief Superintendent Tan Seng Lee said police seized various types of fireworks from the suspects after a distressed call was placed by the female house owner at 9.56pm.
Preliminary investigations revealed the fire was triggered by fireworks. The men are believed to have thrown the firecrackers onto the house in an act of mischief.
"The foreigner tested positive for marijuana, which raises further questions about the motive," Tan said in a statement today.
Both suspects are being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which could lead to a maximum 14-year prison term and fines. They also face charges under Section 8 of the Explosives Act and may face a maximum seven-year jail sentence and fines of up to RM10,000.
The Kulai Magistrate's Court has granted a six-day remand, effective today until Nov 6, to facilitate investigations.
