KOTA KINABALU: An allocation of RM7 million would be used to develop Sipadan island with world class infrastructure.
Sabah Parks director Dr Maklarin Lakim said the funds are from the federal and Sabah tourism ministries.
"This support fuels the hope that Sabah Parks will continue to excel in safeguarding and restoring the natural treasures of Sipadan Island Park for the next 1,000 years," he said during the 15th Anniversary of Sipadan Island Park Declaration (2009-2024) at a hotel here.
Sipadan Island is the only oceanic limestone island in Malaysia, standing 600m above the sea floor.
Maklarin said it was a significant achievement when Sabah Parks officially declared Sipadan island as a park on November 5, 2009.
Since then, the island has flourished with various conservation and educational activities, generating revenue amounting to RM16,297,85 and welcoming 40,133 tourists including divers as of 2023.
"The conservation fee collection in 2023 reached RM3,457,250, a notable increase of RM2,464,065 compared to RM993,185 in 2022, which was contributed to the Sabah government.
"This revenue growth was driven by effective governance and management practices outlined in the Sabah Parks Strategic Plan (2015-2025)," he said.
In ensuring sustainable tourism, Sabah Parks also limits 37 companies with a daily diver quota at 254. There are also six dive marshals on standby.
