KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians travelling to Taiwan will now be able to enjoy the convenience of using Taiwan's e-Gate system for a quicker and more streamlined immigration process.
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, in a post on its website, said this comes after Malaysia granted Taiwanese visitors auto-gate system access in June.
"With this mutual agreement, Malaysia became the seventh country to establish a reciprocal automated gate arrangement with Taiwan, joining the United States, South Korea, Australia, Italy, Germany and Singapore," the post read.
It, however, said that the e-Gate system in Taiwan is only available to Malaysians holding an electronic passport valid for at least six months.
Malaysian travellers must be at least 140cm tall and 12 years old and above to qualify for this immigration process at Taiwanese airports.
Those with criminal records in Taiwan are not privy to this.
"Eligible Malaysians can register for free at designated counters in the arrival hall. Once registered, they can use the e-Gate for both entry and exit," the post said.
Taiwanese citizens visiting Malaysia with an electronic passport valid for more than six months and with a height of at least 120cm can just complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online three days prior to their arrival for the same entry privilege.
"Upon arrival, they can use Malaysia's auto-gate without any additional registration.
"This programme is expected to significantly reduce waiting time at immigration counters for both Malaysian and Taiwanese travellers."
This auto-gate system, it said, would only take about 10 seconds to clear entry for visitors, whereas manual immigration checks can take anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes.
This collaboration between Malaysia and Taiwan aims to boost the travel experience for citizens of both countries.
