NARATHIWAT: A spokesman for Narathiwat Prison, where six Malaysians are being held following a Thai police drug bust, said the food served to prisoners is halal.
This follows concerns raised by netizens. The six include a dikir barat singer.
A prison spokesman said yesterday the food is cooked by Muslims.
"Like other detainees, the six Malaysians, caught in Sungai Golok on Nov 1, are given meals three times a day.
"The food is cooked by Muslim workers, so the rumour that they are given non-halal food is baseless."
He said the Malaysians are in good health.
"They are treated like others. The three Malaysian women are separated from the three men.
"They take part in activities organised by the prison.
"The three women are given a choice between wearing long- or short-sleeved prison clothes. They are also allowed to wear headscarves."
The spokesman said their families are allowed to visit them once a week and are given 15 minutes each to talk with the six.
The spokesman said the six would be held at the prison until police complete their investigation.
