Monsoon floods: Pahang SWCorp sets up 176 temporary waste transit stations

KUANTAN: Pahang Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) has set up 176 temporary waste transit stations to help ease post-flood clean-up operations.

Its director Sharudin Hamid said the transit sites will be activated in case of floods to make it easier for the corporation, along with contractors, to assist with clean-up works to help dispose of bulk and domestic waste.

"We have identified 176 transit sites at eight districts in Pahang with the highest number in Temerloh with 107 sites. The temporary sites will be utilised to gather garbage before it is taken to the nearby landfill.

"The transit sites will reduce the time spent for the compactor to collect and send garbage to the landfills.

"All the garbage disposed during the floods will be brought to the temporary site before the compactor brings them to the landfill... the clean-up process can be completed within a shorter duration," he told reporters after handing out awards to the winners of the 2024 Schools Recycling Competition here today.

Sharudin said members of the public will not be allowed to enter the temporary sites and only contractors appointed by SWCorp will have access into the area.

"The public are only required to place the garbage at the waste bins in front of their houses and our contractor will collect and transport the waste to the temporary sites located in the vicinity. The sites will be closed once the flood clean-up operations are over," he said.

Meanwhile, Sharudin said the post-flood clean-up works had started in Raub and Lipis after all the victims returned to their respective homes today.

"We are coordinating with the district Disaster Operation Control Centre (PKOB) for the clean-up works and this will ensure there is no overlap of duties. Non-governmental organisations who want to assist with the clean-up works must liaise with the respective district PKOB," he said.
