KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Bhd deputy group managing editor Farrah Naz Abd Karim was named the recipient of the Women Leadership Award at the National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJM) Diamond Jubilee celebration held here today.
Farrah Naz was honoured with the award in recognition of her contributions to the country's journalism landscape.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof presented the award to Farrah Naz at the ceremony, which was held at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) here.
Present at the event were Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Media Prima group managing editor Jasbant Singh, former New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd group managing editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman and WTCKL group managing director Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim.
Over 300 journalists and media professionals attended the event, including foreign correspondents from South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, celebrating decades of unity and progress in Malaysian journalism.
"NUJM, which today is 62 years old, has an important task, among others, to continue to negotiate with employers in finding a common ground of understanding.
"This includes determining the appropriate remuneration rates as well as other service benefits enjoyed by media practitioners under the auspices of the union," said Fadillah in his speech.
The evening featured a line-up of performers, including host Uyaina Arshad and guest artists Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza and Nadeera Zaini.
"Looking ahead, we aim to secure additional resources to support research and initiatives that equip journalists for the future.
"NUJM will continue to advocate for a strong, resilient press that serves the public good," said NUJM president Farah Marshita Abdul Patah.
After the event, Farah reaffirmed the importance of the union and called for more industry players to take part.
"We hope that union is something that everyone will consider, media bosses will consider, and even the media practitioners will consider, because union is about taking care of its members," she added.
