JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru Integrated Operations Control Centre (JBIOCC) will have 108 artificial intelligence-enabled closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and 500 surveillance cameras.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said that the new surveillance cameras installed would ensure better city management and will help transform the state capital into a leading smart city.
"It will allow the Johor Baru City Council authorities to safely monitor and control traffic, react immediately to infrastructure issues or disaster responses, and take immediate action against any acts of vandalism or crime," Onn Hafiz said in a Facebook post yesterday.
He also said that a 2025-2026 plan had been outlined to ensure Johor Baru achieves the status of a leading smart city.
He added that high-tech improvements were necessary for greater urban efficiency and community welfare.
The 108 AI-enabled CCTVs, an advanced integrated smart operations centre, and the 500 surveillance cameras will be monitored by the council's operation centre at Menara MBJB.
Meanwhile, Housing and Local Government Committee chairman, Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, said nearly 1,000 smart CCTVs had been installed in the greater Johor Baru area, involving four municipal and city councils.
The greater JB initiative aims to improve the quality of life, attract investment, and position the state capital as a key economic hub.
The efforts to implement the greater JB framework are being carried out by four local authorities: the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG), and Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu).
He said that 500 CCTV units had been installed in MBJB, 300 in MBPG, 100 in MBIP, and 90 in MPKu.
He added that while efforts to install more surveillance cameras were ongoing, eight of the 16 municipal and city councils in Johor had received level one smart city recognition.
"There are two levels of smart city status, recognised by the Housing and Local Government Ministry. Currently, only MBJB and Putrajaya have received level two status," he said.
The CCTVs have been installed in strategic areas, including road intersections and frequently crowded locations.
