KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry is conducting an in-depth study on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the defence sector, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.
Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said this was part of a strategic effort to bridge gaps and that the study would cover several key aspects.
These include the use of AI in weapon systems, cybersecurity, and data processing and analysis.
"Using AI for rapid decision-making is a critical element in strengthening military control and operations.
"However, the development of robust and secure AI infrastructure must first be established to support defence systems.
"The government also emphasises on talent development, collaboration with academic institutions and industries, and the establishment of clear ethical frameworks to ensure the responsible use of AI in line with international ethics."
Adly said this in reply to a question from Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan), who asked about the government's readiness to use AI technology in the military sector to strengthen defence capabilities.
Adly said in the Defence White Paper mid-term review, the ministry planned to implement the development of strategic technologies such as unmanned systems, smart weapons and space technology.
He said the ministry would look at how AI could be used to drive innovation, enhance human capital capabilities and strengthen cooperation among stakeholders to build a resilient defence ecosystem.
In a supplementary question, Puzi asked to what extent the use of AI ensured the safety and sovereignty of the country.
To this, Adly said: "This revolution of technology is used not just for the benefit of the country and our people, but also in defence.
"In the Defence White Paper review, we will be focusing on five points — the people responsible (for the technology), the control of the system, the system itself, the law, and ethics and morals."
