KUALA LUMPUR: The government will soon introduce a new-generation MyKad.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah informed the Dewan Rakyat that the National Registration Department (NRD) is in the final phase of procuring a newly structured identity card (MyKad) to replace the version issued since 2012.
He said that the updated MyKad aims to incorporate advanced security features, enhancing safety and aligning with the latest technological developments in security.
"This initiative seeks to prevent forgery and misuse of the MyKad, a critical identification document for Malaysia," he said in response to a question from Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara).
Shamsul said that the new-generation MyKad is made from durable polycarbonate material, rigorously tested in accredited laboratories.
"It includes enhanced security features, a larger storage capacity, and meets higher security standards. This new design also boasts modern elements such as advanced laser engraving and holograms, ensuring its compatibility with current technology and addressing forgery concerns," he added.
Regarding costs, he said that the NRD is conducting a market study to ensure the new MyKad adheres to the principle of best value for money.
"This effort aims to keep production costs manageable for the government while ensuring optimal resource use in line with official guidelines," he added.
Meanwhile, the Dewan Rakyat was informed that 190 individuals have been charged for possession of fake MyKads or those belonging to others.
Shamsul said that between 2022 and October this year, the NRD conducted 2,103 enforcement actions nationwide, including 497 integrated operations with other enforcement agencies.
"From these operations, 519 individuals were arrested for offences under the National Registration Regulations 1990. Of those, 190 were charged - 130 for possessing fake MyKads and 60 for using MyKads belonging to others," he said in response to a supplementary question from Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut).
