Pas leadership split over PN top post

KUALA LUMPUR: The Pas leadership appears divided over calls for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general position to be held by a party representative.

This follows conflicting remarks from Pas vice president Datuk Idris Ahmad and youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.

At a press conference in Parliament, Idris dismissed claims of Pas pushing for the role, defending the appointment of Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

"Where did you hear that Pas demanded the PN secretary-general position? From the enemy? If so, you mustn't believe it. These are just whispers of 'syaitan' trying to divide us," said the Bagan Serai MP, adding that there is unity within the coalition.

He said that Pas leaders recently held an usrah (meeting) with PN to strengthen their cooperation.

However, earlier reports indicated dissatisfaction within Pas after PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced Azmin's appointment without prior consultation.

Afnan Hamimi had reportedly suggested Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan for the post, currently held by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who is expected to step down following his election as Bersatu deputy president.
