Changlun hit by flash floods, rivers in Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap rising

ALOR STAR: Continuous rainfall since yesterday evening has caused several main rivers in Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap districts to rise to warning and danger levels.

In Kubang Pasu, 10 houses in low-lying areas of Kampung Nangmah in Changlun subdistrict were hit by flash floods early this morning.

Kubang Pasu Civil Defence Force Officer, Mohd Adenin Suhaimi said the village was hit by the flash floods at about 6am today.

"The water levels are continuing to rise, with a height exceeding 1.2 metres and our personnel are monitoring the situation on the ground.

"We wish to advise affected residents to relocate to safe areas or temporary evacuation centres (PPS)," he said in a statement.

However, as of 2pm, he said no PPS had been activated yet, pending an approval from the District Officer.

Meanwhile, water levels of the main rivers in Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap districts are rising.

In Kubang Pasu, Sungai Laka and Sungai Sintok have hit the danger level at 22.51m and 45.8m respectively, while Sungai Laka has reached alert level at 24.41m.

In Padang Terap, reading stations on three rivers, namely Sungai Sari, Sungai Janing and Sungai Perik have reached warning levels at 28.34m, 26m and 13.83m respectively, while Sungai Padang Terap has hit an alert level at 16.21m.

It was reported earlier that the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under the Drainage and Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for the Kubang Pasu district, from midday today until Friday.

Among the hotspots are low-lying areas within five kilometres of Sungai Laka (Sungai Temin), such as Kampung Paya Nongmi Jalan Changlun-Jitra, Kampung Telok, and Kampung Padang Pasir.
