Flash floods displace 36 in Changlun, raising fears of second wave in Kedah

KUBANG PASU: Just days after being allowed to return home, 36 villagers from Kampung Nangmah in Changlun were evacuated to a temporary relief centre after their homes were hit by flash floods late last night.

District Civil Defence Force officer Mohd Adenin Suhaimi said the evacuees, from 10 families, were relocated to the centre around midnight after floodwaters inundated their homes.

The incident has raised concerns about a possible second wave of floods, following the displacement of over 8,400 victims from seven districts during the peak of the first wave last week

As of 8pm yesterday, Pendang was the only district in the state that has yet to recover from the floods with 213 evacuees still seeking shelter at two relief centres.

Kuala Nerang in the Padang Terap district was also affected by flash floods yesterday following several hours of heavy rain.

Padang Terap member of Parliament Nurul Amin Hamid, in a Facebook post, said that parts of Kuala Nerang town were briefly flooded to knee height yesterday evening.

Yesterday, Kedah Meteorological Department director Muhammad Khalil Abd Aziz said the west coast and rural areas of the peninsula can expect evening thunderstorms and strong winds starting tomorrow until Thursday, due to the ongoing monsoon transition.
