Bridge submerged, residents of 4 villages in Kuala Krai cut off

KUALA KRAI: More than 500 residents in four villages in this district are now cut off after the Pasir Jering Bridge was submerged by water reaching up to six metres following continuous heavy rain over the past three days.

The four villages affected are Kampung Dusun Ban, Kampung Pasir Jering, Kampung Batu Pagar, and Kampung Dusun Bunut.

Mohd Saidi Jaafar, 57, a resident of Kampung Pasir Jering, said the relentless heavy rain caused the Nal River to overflow, submerging the nearly 40m long iron bridge.

"Pasir Jering Bridge is usually one of the first to be submerged due to its very low position from the riverbank. This happens several times each year.

"Whenever there is continuous heavy rain, the river's water level rises dramatically," he said when contacted.

He said that the bridge is the main route for residents to reach the town of Kuala Krai.

"Now, we are all trapped because the access road is flooded. The ongoing heavy rain and the rising river levels bring back the nightmare of the 'yellow flood' in 2014, which haunts the residents.

"However, I hope that a major flood like the one 10 years ago, which caused extensive damage to many homes, does not happen again," he said.
