ISKANDAR PUTERI: The state government is considering a night safari at Johor Zoo, following strong public interest since its reopening on Aug 31, with eco-friendly lighting to mimic natural nocturnal conditions.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (BN-Machap) said the proposal stems from feedback from visitors eager for a nighttime safari experience at Malaysia's oldest zoo.
"Pending the successful implementation of the second upgrade phase, we are exploring the possibility of launching a night safari," he said at state assembly, today.
Onn Hafiz said several aspects including safety measures for visitors and animals are a top priority.
"There are plans to install eco-friendly lighting that mimics natural nocturnal conditions without disturbing animal habitats.
"Accessibility improvements, including pathways for individuals with disabilities and the elderly, are also under review.
Johor Zoo, spanning over 12 hectares, reopened after a four-year closure for refurbishment. It has since drawn 500,000 visitors, a significant milestone for the 96-year-old institution.
Collaborative efforts, including RM9 million in funding from Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, and Pasir Gudang city councils, facilitated the zoo's reopening.
He said by next year projected visitors are expected to reach one million, with revenue at RM6 million, which will ensure that the zoo will be self-sustainable.
"Johor Zoo has seen extraordinary success since its reopening, and we are confident it will continue to thrive as a premier tourist destination," Onn Hafiz said in respond to the supplementary question poised by Tan Chong (DAP-Bekok).
