Parents warned against bringing children to watch rising river in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: Police have advised parents not to bring their children to see the rising river waters caused by the heavy downpour, including at the Sultan's Pier here.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said parents must prioritise their children's safety before bringing them to such places.

"Kelantan people always consider floods a 'festival', and they play with floodwaters with their family and friends.

"It also happens when a river level is rising. "They will bring their family, including small kids, to watch the river without thinking of their safety," he said.

Mohd Yusoff said parents bringing their small children to watch the rising water would expose them to danger.

At the Sultan's Pier, many took the opportunity of the weekend night to bring their families to see the river up close.

The river began to rise this morning following the continuous heavy rain that hit the state since Monday.

The flood in Kelantan continues to worsen today, with about 50,000 evacuees reported.

Meanwhile, state health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said 18 health clinics in Kelantan were forced to close due to the floods. He said the clinics were located in six districts, namely, Pasir Mas, Machang, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Tumpat and Kota Baru.

"Eleven of the clinics are located in Pasir Mas, while the others are in five districts," he said.
