[UPDATED] PM orders ministers to prioritise flood response, bans leave

 

PUTRAJAYA: Ministers and deputy ministers are prohibited from taking leave as the flood crisis continues to affect several states.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that ministers must prioritise their duties during this critical time.

"All ministers are instructed to continue their duties and head to the affected areas," he said.

When asked if holidays for cabinet members had been officially suspended, Anwar confirmed, "Yes."

He said this after attending Friday prayers at Surau Pudina in Putrajaya.

As of this morning, continuous rainfall has caused a significant increase in the number of flood victims across several states, with Kelantan recording the highest number. 

A total of 59,232 individuals have been evacuated to 221 temporary relief centres, compared to 50,947 at 207 centres the previous night.

In Terengganu, 20,911 people from 5,916 families are sheltering in 232 relief centres, up from 17,762 at 8pm yesterday.

Other states affected by the floods include Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Ngeri Sembilan, and Selangor.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a continuous rain warning for eight states: Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Johor.
