PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Timor-Leste reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties during an official visit by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão today, especially on Malaysia's support for Timor-Leste's bid to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
"Prime Minister Anwar reiterated Malaysia's commitment to support Timor-Leste in its journey towards becoming a full member of Asean," said a joint statement.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of Timor-Leste's early accession to Asean legal instruments as part of its ongoing integration process.
As Malaysia is set to take up the mantle of the organisation's chair in 2025, Anwar pledged to work closely with member states to expedite this process, noting that Timor-Leste's membership would contribute to "regional peace, stability, and development".
The leaders also witnessed the exchange of notes on visa exemption arrangements between the two countries.
"This milestone will not only fulfil one of the requirements under the Roadmap for Timor-Leste's Full Membership in Asean but also further promote the tourism sector," the statement noted.
Discussions extended to global and regional issues, including the prolonged humanitarian crises in Myanmar and Gaza.
Both leaders expressed "deep concern" over the escalation of conflicts in Myanmar, condemning violence against civilians and urging adherence to the Asean Leaders' Five-Point Consensus.
On Gaza, they called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and reaffirmed their support for an independent Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, in line with UN resolutions.
Additionally, Malaysia extended its gratitude to Timor-Leste for gifting a parcel of land for its diplomatic premises in Dili.
"The leaders welcomed the signing of the Land Concession Agreement and Malaysia looks forward to commencing the development of its Embassy Complex at the earliest opportunity," the statement added.
A new Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) was also announced to strengthen cooperation and monitor the progress of bilateral initiatives.
The leaders expressed anticipation for the inaugural meeting of the mechanism, which will be led at the senior officials' level.
