JOHOR BARU: A family is demanding accountability after a Form One student fractured her pelvis when her chair was moved by a classmate, causing her to fall.
The incident took place on Nov 17 at a school in Batu Pahat. The family filed a police report two days later on Nov 19.
The New Straits Times has reached out to the school for comment.
Her elder sister, Shahirah Shah, 20, expressed frustration, claiming a teacher dismissed the injury as "fate."
"My sister complained of pain after school, we rushed her to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat later that evening when the pain worsened," she said.
Shahirah said medical scans showed she had a broken tailbone, and the injury caused my sister severe pain.
She, however, alleged that the school teachers made no effort to inform the family or seek medical help.
"The teacher's indifference was shocking. The principal wasn't notified right away, and the teacher who commented on the injury allegedly did nothing to assist," she said.
Shahirah said the family's request to move the student's class to the ground floor next year for health reasons was also rejected.
"The teacher even belittled the doctor's report, claiming her own child, a doctor, would not consider it serious," she said.
The injured 13-year-old student was later removed from her class WhatsApp group, which the family described as an act of ostracism. "We felt she was boycotted by the school's management."
Shahirah added, "This isn't the first such incident in schools, but it shouldn't be trivialized. Schools must prioritise safety and educate students about these risks."
She also called on education authorities to address the negligence in managing student safety to prevent similar incidents in the future.
