TAWAU: A mild earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7 on the Richter scale was detected in several areas here early this morning.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), in a brief statement on its official website, confirmed that the tremor struck at 4.54am.
"The epicentre was located at 4.5 degrees North and 118.1 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
"It occurred 17 km north of Tawau, Sabah, with the tremors felt in surrounding areas," the department said on its official Facebook page.
METMalaysia also encouraged those who felt the tremor to complete a survey form via the provided link.
