KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 93 illegal immigrants were detained by the Immigration Department at the PKNS apartment in Taman Dagang, Ampang Jaya, last night.
Its director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the operation began at 12.30am, involved 162 officers from the department's headquarters, along with five members of the Civil Defence Force.
He said those arrested were from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan, aged between four months and 55 years.
"During the operation, the officers inspected 189 individuals following public complaints about suspected illegal immigrants residing in the area.
"Some foreigners attempted to flee and the raid took place in an apartment complex predominantly occupied by foreign nationals," he said in a statement today.
He said those detained are suspected of violating the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Passport Act 1966 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.
Zakaria said the detainees have been placed in the immigration depot for investigation and further action.
