Deputy public prosecutor to decide on charges against KLIA officers - Azam

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recommended two charges against two Immigration Department officers accused of masterminding a counter-setting syndicate at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the decision to proceed with charges rests with the deputy public prosecutor, who will determine whether the officers will be prosecuted this month or early next year.

"I leave it to DPP whether they want to prosecute this year," he told reporters after attending the International Anti-Corruption Day here today.

Azam also expressed support for the initiatives launched by the Immigration Department director-general to improve the services and integrity of his officers at the checkpoints.

"They are our frontliners and must portray a good image," he said.

Earlier today, it was reported that the Immigration Department aims to fully rotate its personnel to eradicate integrity issues by mid-next year.

Its director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the move is a measure to minimise the risk of misconduct, including issues related to counter setting.

In September, the MACC arrested 50 Immigration officers suspected of being involved in the counter setting syndicate and identified 11 issues that allowed the syndicate to bring in foreign nationals using this modus operandi.
