KOTA BARU: Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said today that he did not know the purpose of an individual who impersonated him and invited people to join a WhatsApp group.
He said many of his friends had called him to ask about the matter.
"I'm not sure what the reason was for the individual impersonating me and inviting many to join him in a WhatsApp Friendship Group on the messaging app.
"I only have one telephone contact number and a report was already lodged," he said.
Speaking to reporters after witnessing the handing over of the new Kelantan police chief's post here, Ayob described the individual as "suffering from a mental illness".
He also urged the public not to be fooled by the individual.
Earlier, Ayob witnessed the handing over of the post between new Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusuff Mamat from state acting police chief Deputy Commissioner Mohd Ali Thamby at the state police headquarters here.
It was reported on Oct 21 that police were tracking down an individual who had impersonated Ayob on WhatsApp.
City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the individual, using the name "Dato Ayob Khan Mydin" had sent out invites to people to join a 'WhatsApp Friendship Group' on the messaging app.
He clarified that Ayob has never operated such a group on WhatsApp. He said the irresponsible action could cause public anxiety and potentially tarnish the image of the force.
