KLUANG: A loud, unexplained sound startled residents in several parts of Kampung Tengah near here, with villagers claiming their home shook, while some said their ceilings collapsed.
The source of the sound, which occurred about 9am remains unknown.
State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon, who confirmed that the loud explosion sound was heard, said the source is still being investigated.
"We are aware that the sound was indeed heard across several areas in the district. Relevant agencies are working to determine the cause. I advised the villagers to stay calm, and strongly advise against spreading unverified information or making baseless speculations, as this could lead to unnecessary panic," Ling told the New Straits Times.
The sudden sound sparked concerns on social media, with the affected residents sharing their experiences and seeking answers on Kluang Hari Ini (KHI) Facebook page, and its community WhatsApp group.
KHI Facebook page administrator posted a banner, seeking explanations.
Its banner post- "What exploded in Kampung Tengah at 9am today that caused houses to shake?", drew over 100 reactions from villagers, with more than 20 of them comparing them to the Dec 7 tremor and loud sounds in Machang, Kelantan.
However, Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat had earlier debunked the blast and tremor claims.
