Thai man fleeing Malaysian police near Kelantan border, drowns

RANTAU PANJANG: Thai authorities yesterday found the body of a Thai man three days after he jumped into Sungai Golok to escape arrest by Malaysian police. He was trying to enter Kelantan through an illegal jetty here.

Thai search-and-rescue team discovered the body of 22-year-old Subear Dallah in the river, which separates Bukit Lata here and Mundok, on the Thai side yesterday morning.

Mundok deputy police chief Lieutenant-Colonel Teepakorn Thitichayakul said the body of the victim was found near the area where he was reported missing on Tuesday.

He said the body was sent to Sungai Golok Hospital for a post-mortem.

It is learnt that the victim had used a boat to enter Kelantan from the Sungai Golok sub-province on Tuesday morning.

Fear of being arrested, he decided to swim back to the Thai side when Malaysian police spotted him on the riverbank.

The SAR team was mounted by the Thai authorities after being informed by several people who saw him disappearing into the water.
