KUALA LUMPUR: Some 15 families in Kampung Darat Kubor, Dungun, Terengganu, are having sleepless nights due to a three-metre-deep sinkhole that appeared on the only road leading to Paka town, believed to have been caused by the recent floods.
Worried for their safety, one of the villagers, Hamid Ali, told Buletin TV3 that following the recent flood, the soil beneath the tar road had been completely washed away, leaving a large hole under the road.
Residents could also see a waterway inside the opening, which is clearly dangerous, as the road could collapse at any time.
"I have to use the road to get to town, I would say my prayers before travelling through that stretch," he said, calling on the authorities to resolve the matter immediately.
Another resident, Nurul Fatihah Zakaria said a few government officials have visited the site but no one has initiated any remedial works on the road.
"Please take the necessary action. That is all that we are asking is to repair the sinkhole and damaged road, so that it would be safe again for us to use.
"There are so many teenagers who ride their motorcycles through that road and anything can happen at any time," she said.
Meanwhile, Dungun District Lands and Mines officer, Jusman Ibrahim said a meeting is scheduled with Drainage and Irrigation department officials this week to discuss the matter.
