AirAsia flight makes U-turn after takeoff due to bad weather

KUALA LUMPUR: An AirAsia flight bound for Singapore had to return to Penang International Airport shortly after takeoff on Dec 13 at 9.50pm due to a minor incident caused by adverse weather conditions.

According to news portal Mothership, passengers of flight AK1729 experienced an eight-hour delay before departing again at 5.50am on Dec 14.

Flight tracking website FlightAware reported the aircraft landed safely at Singapore's Changi Airport at 7am, some 11 hours behind the scheduled arrival time.

A male passenger who spoke to Shin Min Daily News, said that the flight had already faced a two-hour delay before the initial takeoff at 9.30pm.

He claimed the aircraft turned back due to a cracked windshield and shared a photo showing what appeared to be a crack on one of the windshield panels.

In response to Mothership's inquiries, AirAsia Malaysia confirmed the flight turned back due to "a minor incident caused by adverse weather conditions."

"The flight crew followed strict safety protocols, opting for a precautionary return to ensure the safety of all on board," it said.

The airline assured that all passengers disembarked safely in Singapore, and the aircraft underwent a thorough inspection to ensure its operational readiness.

Affected passengers were offered recovery options, including free flight changes within six months, account credits, or full refunds.

Meals and accommodations were also arranged.

AirAsia CEO Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra praised the crew's professionalism, saying that they adhered to all safety protocols to manage the situation effectively.
