GUA MUSANG: A stop-work order has been issued to two mining companies for allegedly polluting the Kelaik River in Gua Musang, Kelantan, a crucial water source for the local population.
Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the decision followed an investigation by the Department of Environment (DOE).
The investigation found that Aqua Orion Sdn Bhd had carried out activities without proper approval. "Investigation papers will be opened immediately," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
The DOE will also request that the Kelantan State Land and Mines Office (PTG) suspend Aqua Orion's mining licence renewal until an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report is submitted for review and approval.
In addition to its natural beauty, the Kelaik River is vital for local water supply and irrigation, supporting agriculture in the area.
The other company affected by the stop-work order is Gua Musang Mining Sdn Bhd (Redstar Capital Sdn Bhd).
Nik Nazmi stated that Gua Musang Mining had failed to comply with EIA approval conditions.
Action will be taken if project initiators do not adhere to EIA conditions, he warned. Convictions could result in up to five years' imprisonment, a fine ranging from RM100,000 to RM1 million.
