PM to meet Prabowo, Thaksin in Langkawi next week

SUBANG JAYA: Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto and Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be in Langkawi next week to discuss matters related to Asean ahead of Malaysia's chairmanship next year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he would meet Prabowo on Monday and Thaksin on Thursday.

"Firstly, the bilateral meeting with Prabowo in Malaysia will be held in Langkawi on Dec 23. However, he has opted to make this a one-on-one meeting to discuss several bilateral issues as well as our perspectives on Asean and its developments.

"On Dec 26, also in Langkawi, I will have a meeting with Thaksin. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss his role in detail, as he has significant strengths in terms of relationships with several Asean leaders and his experience.

"Both aspects aim to assist in addressing the Myanmar issue while positioning ourselves with a more strategic approach," he said at a press conference, here, today.

On Dec 16, Anwar announced that Thaksin had been appointed as a member of the informal advisory group to Malaysia's Asean chairmanship in 2025.

He said Malaysia requires statesmen like Thaksin to share expertise and ideas with the Asean Chair on regional issues.

Prabowo is the newly elected Indonesian president who assumed office on Oct 20.
