KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke today urged Malaysians to celebrate differences and cherish unity this Christmas, highlighting the importance of maintaining harmony despite challenges.
"We must celebrate our diversity together. This is important to maintain Malaysia's unity," said Loke at the Christmas high-tea reception held by the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM).
Acknowledging the economic, political, and religious challenges the country faces, he warned against forces that seek to divide the nation.
"There are groups and people who will continuously stir the country ... but these forces must be defeated. We cannot allow any force to divide or destabilise the nation."
He highlighted the significance of closing divides, not only between races and religions but also between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.
"Increasingly, there are divisive sentiments, but we must not allow geographical differences to separate us."
He reiterated policies the government has introduced, such as the airfare cap during festive seasons.
Reflecting on the Winter Solstice Festival (Dongzhi), a Chinese holiday that also takes place today, he drew a parallel between family and national unity.
"(Dongzhi) represents family reunion ... the concept of family reunion should apply to the nation as well.
"We are one big family called Malaysia, where we have diverse religions, cultures, and races."
As Malaysian Christians enjoy the festive season, he urged them to celebrate differences and cherish the nation's peace and harmony.
"We must remain united and pray for a better Malaysia."
The reception included a speech by CFM chairman Cor Episcopa Philip Thomas and performances by gospel choirs.
The event was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok.
Earlier this month, Loke announced the government had extended the subsidy to cap airfares at RM499 for festive seasons from three days to four days during festive seasons, starting with Christmas.
He added that the subsidy covers air travel between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.
