KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has expressed confidence in Malaysia's ability to make significant strides as the Asean chairman next year.
He said the one-year tenure will be crucial, particularly in navigating complex geopolitical tensions while reaping economic and tourism benefits.
He highlighted the importance of neutrality and consensus-based decision-making within the 10-member bloc.
"Asean does not exist in a vacuum.
"In the context of geopolitical tensions, such as those between the United States and China, Asean plays a very significant role.
"Although there is consensus, we acknowledge the diversity within Asean, from Singapore to Myanmar," he said on the Sembang Malam podcast last night.
Also present were National Journalism Laureate Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar, who hosted the session, along with Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Ilham Centre executive director Hisomuddin Bakar as panel members.
Fahmi said a milestone under Malaysia's chairmanship would be the inclusion of Timor-Leste as Asean's 11th member.
He described this as a historic expansion of the bloc, symbolised by the addition of a new stripe to the Asean logo.
Meanwhile, he reiterated Malaysia's commitment to ensuring Asean remains neutral and avoids becoming a "chessboard" for major geopolitical powers.
"We will not allow Asean to be used for geopolitical games, even though some member countries may align with specific blocs."
Fahmi said Malaysia's Asean chairmanship in 2025 would coincide with the hosting of 323 meetings nationwide.
He said the influx of visitors, ranging from government officials and heads of state to global leaders, would bring substantial economic benefits.
"To ensure local communities benefit, the prime minister has directed that all souvenirs for delegates must be locally produced.
"My ministry is working with local artisans, including those from Orang Asli communities, to supply handcrafted products."
The year 2025 also aligns with Malaysia's Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
Fahmi said tourism in the country is expected to receive a boost as Asean delegates and visitors explore the country during the events.
