PBS postpones congress due to expected state election

PENAMPANG: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will postpone its congress that is scheduled for October next year.

Its acting president, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, said that due to the expected state election, the party has to postpone the congress, which is supposed to have a new president to helm PBS.

Incumbent president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili had said in previous years that he planned to step down in 2025.

However, due to health reasons, Maximus had taken earlier leave last year and announced that his deputy president, Dr Joachim, would be the acting president.

"In fact, he (the president) had passed the baton to me. He had stepped down. We have the Constitution, which we still need to wait for the next congress to determine whether there is any competition for the presidency," he told the media after the PBS-Parti Solidariti Rakyat Sabah (Star) Christmas election at Hongkod Koisaan here.

Meanwhile, for the state elections, Dr Joachim, who is also deputy chief minister, assured that PBS would remain in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

"For next year's state election, PBS will align with GRS no matter what. We will form a coalition."

Present were Star president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and other GRS component leaders.
