KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has reminded road users to be mindful of heavy vehicle blind spots to minimise the risk of accidents.
Blind spots are among the five key factors identified by the department as causes of accidents involving heavy vehicles, along with recommendations on how to address them.
The other factors are lane switching, unwell drivers, heavy rain, and failure to inspect vehicles.
"Do not linger in 'blind spot' areas.
"Ensure heavy vehicle drivers are aware of your presence.
"Other vehicles should maintain a three-second distance when behind heavy vehicles and avoid staying in blind spot zones," it said.
Meanwhile, heavy vehicle drivers are urged to ensure that no other vehicles are in their blind spots and to always use signals before changing lanes or making turns.
Motorists are also urged to avoid driving while drowsy and to refrain from consuming any alcohol or drugs before or during their journey.
"If you feel tired, don't drive; your health is key to a safe journey.
"Nothing is more important than life," the department said.
RTD also emphasised the importance of maintaining a safe distance from heavy vehicles.
"Distance is crucial.
"Give heavy vehicles space, as they require more time to stop or overtake," it said.
Heavy rain was also listed as a contributing factor to accidents involving heavy vehicles, as it can impair drivers' visibility.
"Wet roads increase danger.
"Turn on your lights, reduce your speed, and drive cautiously," it said.
On vehicle safety, RTD reminded drivers to inspect their vehicles before starting their journeys.
"Heavy vehicle drivers, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before setting off.
"A small inspection can have a big impact," it said.
RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department is working with other authorities to improve road infrastructure nationwide and ensure that all vehicles operating on the roads comply with set safety standards.
He said regular inspections and stringent safety checks will continue, particularly for public and commercial vehicles.
"RTD will also strengthen its collaboration with transport companies and industry associations to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.
"With stricter measures for commercial vehicles such as buses and lorries, we hope to reduce accidents involving large vehicles on the roads," he said.
The department will also expand its enforcement efforts through digital means and explore using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify traffic offenders more effectively.
