JELEBU: Two men failed in their attempt to flee from the police after being suspected of stealing cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia.
The incident occurred when the car they were in crashed at a bend near Kampung Petasih, here.
Jelebu district police chief, Superintendent Azizan Said, said that the two suspects, aged 20 and 40, were initially spotted by patrolling officers at 3.45am on Jalan Kuala Pah Peradong in a suspicious state.
The suspects, in a Proton Iswara, attempted to escape but lost control after about four kilometres, leading to the crash.
"Police checks found a roll of cable believed to belong to TM, along with equipment likely used in the theft. The police also found a plastic packet containing 5.4 grams of syabu (methamphetamine)," he said today.
Azizan said both suspects admitted to stealing cables on Jalan Kuala Pah Peradong, while the drugs were for personal use.
"The case is being investigated under Section 379 and Section 279 of the Penal Code, while the drug-related case is being investigated under Section 39A (1) and Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
"Both suspects were detained under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and the police will apply for a remand order at the Bahau Magistrate's Court tomorrow morning," he said.
