KUALA LUMPUR: Repair works for the lift facilities at the Desa Rejang public housing (PA) here will be carried out in stages, with the replacement costs to be funded by the Federal Government.
Setiawangsa MP, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, said the lift replacement will involve two phases, with the first phase including 18 units, followed by 20 more units in the second phase.
However, he said that there has been a slight delay in the work compared to the original schedule, with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) expected to start inspections for the new lifts after the contractor submits the application.
"At the same time, the management is handling repairs for the other lifts. I also inspected Block L, where besides one newly replaced lift, another lift is frequently out of order and the management has repaired it.
"Inspection at Block D found that one lift has been replaced, but no other lifts are operational.
"As a result, my office provided food to the residents of Block D on Dec 25," he said in a statement tonight.
He, who is also the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, was commenting on the issue of broken lifts at the public housing project (PPR) and PA in Desa Rejang, which has garnered public attention recently.
Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi, who is also the PKR vice president, informed that some handrails in several blocks at the housing area have been found to be either rotting or removed.
"Following a visit on Dec 16, I have sent a letter to the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) requesting immediate repairs for all the handrails in the relevant blocks at PA Desa Rejang.
"For your information, issues related to the lifts have persisted since 2021. Since 2021, I have been in contact with the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, and the Minister of Federal Territories to take immediate action on the lift problems at PA Desa Rejang.
"The lift replacement allocation by the Madani Government is among the significant expenditures to resolve this issue comprehensively, but I understand that delays on the ground have worried Desa Rejang residents," he said.
