KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has called for a focus on economic development and national progress while setting aside conflicts driven by greed for power and wealth.
In his New Year 2025 message with Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin, His Royal Highness extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Selangor and Malaysians nationwide.
"I hope that the year 2025 will bring greater progress and prosperity to all. In welcoming the new year, I call on all citizens, regardless of religion, race, or political beliefs, to set new resolutions, focusing on efforts to develop the economy and work harder to advance the nation in all sectors. I do not wish to see continued conflicts, especially among leaders, the business community, and civil servants driven by greed for power and wealth," His Royal Highness said.
Sultan Sharafuddin said he has often observed that such disputes frequently lead to the emergence of malicious slander, discord, and the spread of false information, particularly on social media.
Expressing concern over the growing trend of character assassination, Sultan Sharafuddin said that such attempts, which traditionally occurred during election seasons, are now being used to undermine individuals beyond political contexts.
"I advise the public to carefully evaluate and scrutinise information before making assumptions or believing in slander stemming from these attempts. If left unchecked, such behaviour could foster negative societal norms and disrupt harmony within the community," the Sultan said, suggesting that any criticisms or dissatisfaction should be conveyed constructively for the benefit of all.
In this new year, Sultan Sharafuddin also calls on the public to commit collectively to eradicating corruption at all levels by enhancing enforcement and upholding integrity as a core value in daily life.
"It is a reminder that a civilisation can collapse due to rampant and unchecked corruption. I believe that to become a developed nation, its citizens must respect one another, maintain a positive outlook, and unite in harmony. Persistent conflicts will only hinder efforts to progress the nation, leaving the people to bear the burden caused by the arrogance and selfishness of a few."
Sultan Sharafuddin said he is confident that if all citizens unite their efforts, strengthen their resolve, and commit to contributing to the nation's advancement, Malaysia will become a more developed and respected country in 2025.
