Heavy rain in Sedili forces 55 flood victims into relief centres

KOTA TINGGI: Some 55 flash flood victims from 15 families sought shelter at two relief centres in Sedili following heavy rain yesterday.

Despite periodic rains, the floods are easing. One of the three centres in the district, namely Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas in Pengerang, has shut its doors, allowing 13 victims from three families to return to their respective homes.

Johor Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said the flash flood trend improved today, as the Malaysian Meteorological Department forecasted sunny weather in all 10 districts in the state.

However, as a precautionary measure, the Civil Defence Force and other agencies are on standby to monitor the situation.

Two rivers, Sungai Muar, Kampung Awat, and Sungai Ulu Sedili Besar at Batu 52 Sedili, are at warning levels.

On Sunday, heavy rain lasting more than two hours caused flash floods that hit 11 houses in Kampung Melayu Bukit Nyamuk and Kampung Sumber Jaya in Segamat.

However, all temporary relief centres in the district were closed, and evacuees were allowed to return home.
