High tide, heavy rain cause flash floods in Sg Petani, 79 relocated to relief centres

SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 79 people from 20 families in Kampung Huma, Merbok, were relocated to the Dewan Kampung Sungai Pial Temporary Flood Relief Centre (PPS) today due to flash floods.

The floods were triggered by high tide and heavy rain in the area, which began around 3.30pm yesterday.

Kuala Muda Civil Defence Force officer Captain (PA) Amirul Asyraf Mohamad Mayidin said as of 8am today, the affected individuals included 35 men, 28 women, 15 children, and one male toddler.

"Our team will continue monitoring the situation to ensure that all those impacted by the flash floods receive the necessary assistance," he said in a statement today.

Amirul said the high tide and heavy rain cause caused water levels to rise quickly in Kampung Huma.

"Water levels rose to about 0.5 meters, forcing all affected individuals to move to the PPS activated today," he said.

He also said the rain has stopped and the floodwaters have gradually receded.
