RTD issues over 134,000 notices during special motorcycle operation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) issued 134,718 notices for various offences during the nationwide Special Operation on Motorcycles, which began on Nov 1.

RTD deputy director-general (planning and operations) Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi said a total of 563,135 motorcycles were inspected during the two-month operation.

He said the highest number of offences recorded was riding without a licence (38,754 notices), followed by no vehicle registration licence (28,897), no insurance (26,095), non-compliant registration numbers (7,852), expired licences (2,842), action on foreign riders or pillion passengers (2,750), and underage riding (319).

"The department seized 3,668 motorcycles for various offences. In addition, 561 riders were screened, with 66 testing positive.

"A total of 319 underage drivers were detected during the operation," he told reporters during an operation held near the Awan Besar toll plaza tonight.

He said under Section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, action can be taken against the vehicle owner if the vehicle is driven by someone without a valid driving licence.

"The department can also take action against parents or guardians who allow minors to drive a motorcycle without a valid licence under Section 39 of the same Act," he said.

He added individuals involved could be fined up to RM2,000, imprisoned for a period not exceeding six months, or both.

"Parents must take responsibility by monitoring their children's movements to prevent them from riding motorcycles without a driving licence and road tax.

"We urge all road users, especially motorcyclists, to always comply with traffic laws to minimise the rate of accidents and fatalities resulting from road crashes involving motorcycles," he said.
