TNB monopole transmission tower project in Penang begins operation

GEORGE TOWN: Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) monopole transmission tower project, a high impact project to strengthen electricity supply in Penang, has been fully completed and is now operational.

State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the RM500 million project began operations on Dec 22 last year.

It will be officially launched within the next two months.

"When the project was carried out, the state government requested that the lights on the towers, which are aligned with the Penang Bridge, be turned on as a tourist attraction.

"They will be lit from 7pm to 4am. I was informed that there are 200 different colour palettes on the towers, and they are lit up according to a theme," he told newsmen in Komtar here.

Presently, a combination of blue, yellow and white are used, symbolising the Penang flag.

In September 2022, TNB launched the RM500 million electricity supply strengthening project in Penang.

The project, slated for completion last year, would be able to supply up to 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the national grid to Penang.

It would bring a direct connection of electricity supply from the national grid to Penang through overhead line transmission from the mainland to maintain the island's electricity supply.

The 8.5km monopole transmission tower project, connecting the Prai Power Station (SJ) Main Inlet Substation (PMU) to The Light PMU in Penang, was built in parallel with the Penang Bridge and is the second of its kind in Malaysia after Melaka.

A total of 31 monopole towers have been constructed, six of which featured a unique betel nut design, reflecting the local culture and adding aesthetic appeal.

The lighting of the TNB monopole towers has now become a landmark and a new tourist attraction in the state.
