[UPDATED] Police: No foul play in UM cat carcass cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Post-mortems on four cat carcasses found at Universiti Malaya revealed no evidence of foul play.

City deputy police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said the carcasses, discovered on Dec 17, 20 and 25, were examined by the Veterinary Services Department, which confirmed the findings.

"The department confirmed that the first two carcasses found on Dec 17 bore animal bite marks.

"For the other two, examination found that they suffered from severe chest injuries that caused blood loss, leading to circulatory system failure."

He added that no foul play was found in these cases.

"The carcass discovered on Dec 20 had uneven lacerations on three of its legs, which was not caused by any sharp object.

"The carcass discovered on Dec 25 had injuries to its left ribs, and tears to the heart, which were believed to be caused by broken ribs. The carcass also had three varying lacerations to the stomach."

Azry said police have recorded statements from 11 individuals, including lecturers, students, auxiliary police, animal activists and veterinarians.

"As for the fifth carcass discovered on Jan 2, we have since opened an investigation under Section 428 of the Penal Code.

"The carcass has been handed over to the Veterinary Services Department for post-mortem."

He urged the public to avoid speculation that could lead to unnecessary alarm.

Azry said they believed the cats were attacked by dogs.

"There is a pack of dogs, at least four to five of them, within the university compound.

"We will discuss how to handle this situation with the DVS and the university management soon," he added.
