SHAH ALAM: The driver involved in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist in Jalan Klang-Teluk Intan in Jeram, Kuala Selangor, last Tuesday has been confirmed to be a senior police officer.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that the police have recorded the officer's statement on the accident, which occurred when the latter was on leave.
He added that viral videos circulating on social media suggested that the officer could have experienced "microsleep" while driving.
"The officer is also injured and currently receiving treatment in hospital. We will determine if an arrest is necessary after completing the investigation.
"A urine test was conducted and the result was negative," he said during a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters today.
Hussein said that statements from witnesses at the scene, along with evidence from dashcam footage and CCTV recordings from nearby homes, were reviewed to ensure a transparent and fair investigation.
"If the officer is found guilty under the Road Transport Act 1987, appropriate action will be taken," he said.
He said the investigation papers would be completed and submitted to the deputy public prosecutor soon.
Previously, it was reported that a 57-year-old male staff member of a health clinic was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a sports utility vehicle at Kilometre 32, Jalan Klang-Teluk Intan.
The accident occurred at approximately 6.17pm, with the victim reportedly thrown into a small drain before dying at the scene.
The incident gained widespread attention after several videos, lasting between 26 seconds and a minute, went viral on social media.
