KUALA LUMPUR: A resident in Batu Caves has expressed concern over the killing of wild monkeys which were allegedly carried out by Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) officers on June 14.
Facebook user @Vimalchanz Vmal uploaded a video on Wednesday showing two men loading carcasses of dead monkeys onto a pickup truck.
The person recording said he had reported the incident to the Selangor Perhilitan and was asked by an officer to record a video as evidence.
The cameraman also questioned one of the officers in the video for bringing a weapon into the housing area.
The New Straits Times has reached out to Perhilitan and non-governmental organisations for comments.
Meanwhile, Vimalchanz said the monkeys did not attack residents and were just simply foraging for food. He claims that more than 20 monkeys were put down.
"Each morning these cute little monkeys will come near and play, gently interacting with us. One of the monkeys carries her baby and looks for food. But lately, these monkeys are missing.. the Department of Wildlife had set up a cage to trap and shoot them even though they were not harmful or violent at all!"
"Not trying to disturb the duty of Perhilitan but translocating these wild animals away from human habitation, or rehabilitating them for later release into the wild would have been a more humane solution rather than mercilessly killing them," he said.
