KUALA LUMPUR: A troop of monkeys attempting to cross the highway was tragically struck by vehicles on the North-South Expressway (NSE).
A viral video posted by @balistarfear on Reddit shows dashcam footage of the monkeys suddenly running onto the highway, where they were hit by oncoming vehicles that could not stop in time.
The panicking monkeys darted in all directions as cars approached.
Netizens expressed their disappointment over the incident, highlighting the dangers of wildlife crossing busy roads and calling for improved safety measures.
User @phenomenaljunk remarked, "The number of dead monkeys along the highways is shocking. Once, we counted around 20 on our drive from KL to Mersing. It's honestly heartbreaking."
Another user, @HOBoStew139, stressed on the need for wildlife overpasses, saying, "This is yet another reason why they are necessary. Poor monkeys."
User @kentangkrispi added, "This is so heartbreaking. Highways need more dedicated spaces and crossings for animals; we are failing to protect our ecosystem like this."
@b_pop commented, "This is really sad. We definitely need more animal bridges and speed cameras. Kudos to the OP for sharing, but it's worth noting that the OP was over the speed limit, and other cars were going even faster."
User @Opposite_Shape_2914 expressed their concern, saying, "Poor animals. I have always tried to brainstorm startup ideas and solutions to prevent animals from becoming roadkill."
@OneTwoThreeFoolFive hoped for a positive outcome, saying, "I hope the surviving monkeys somehow learn to teach the others how to safely cross the highway."
@GreaseMonkey echoed the sentiment, saying, "Animals need safe crossing bridges, like the ones in Banff National Park."
