KUALA LUMPUR: Footage of an elderly woman being repeatedly slapped and punched by a man believed to operate a glamping site next door has emerged, following a confrontation over open waste burning.
In the incident that was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV), the man dressed in a blue t-shirt and a cap was seen charging at the 80-year-old woman, raining punches and slaps along the way.
Taken by surprise, the woman was heard crying for help while trying to protect herself, but to no avail.
According to a post by CHCH5089 on Reddit, the man seen in the video is the woman's neighbour and operates a glamping business based in Tanjung Kling, Melaka.
The nightmare began when the operator of the glamping site started openly burning waste once every couple of days.
The smoke from the open burning travelled into the old lady's home, and it had greatly impacted her health.
The user further added that she and her family had tried to communicate with the operator, but it had fallen on deaf ears.
They had since reported the issue to the local council, the environment department, and even the police.
Despite getting a warning letter from authorities, CHCH5089 said it was business as usual at the glamping site.
"This afternoon, my grandmother went to confront the person after he was trying to set up for another open burning of rubbish. And then they got into a heated argument," the user recounted in the brief post.
"Suddenly, he charged towards my grandmother and delivered blows after blows to her face. My grandmother tried to defend herself before he slapped her on the back of her head," she said.
As a result, the old woman fell to the ground.
The user ended the post by saying that a police report had been lodged against the man, and he had sent his grandmother to the hospital for a check-up.
"We've done what we could; we just hope the authorities will do their jobs," she wrote.
Netizens were enraged by the actions of the man and have called for a serious punishment.
"This guy should be punished. Please viral the s*** out of this!" one user wrote.
Another user wrote that there was no need to resort to violence.
"There's no need to hit the old lady. That's a line that shouldn't be crossed," it said.
An angry netizen also called out the man's behaviour.
"I hope this blows up and that he faces real consequences for his actions. This is absolutely horrible. What kind of sick man hits an elderly woman? Hitting an elderly person behind the head is essentially attempted murder," the person wrote.
"Disgusting behaviour! I hope this goes viral and the whole glamping site gets suspended," wrote another.
