#NSTviral: Petai and avocado sandwich, anyone? [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman has been met with much controversy after sharing a smashed avocado and petai sandwich recipe on TikTok.

In a video that has since gone viral, TikTok user simplegreensoul starts with: "Today, we're going to make this Australian recipe using this wonderful bean," as she holds up a petai bean.

She then slices, cleans, and steams the petai beans before combining them with peeled and mashed avocado, lime and chilli. This mixture is then used as a filling for a sandwich.

As the video goes on, she explains that petai beans need to be sliced through to check for worms inside.

"I recently found out that you have to actually slice the beans open to check whether there are worms inside."

She added that this recipe is flavourful and that she doesn't mind what others say.

"That is just an absolute flavour explosion. I don't care what anyone says, petai and bread absolutely go together," she said after taking a bite out of the sandwich.

Her video has garnered over 1.3 million views and 71,700 likes, inviting a mix of hate and love comments for her concoction.

One comment read: "Petai sandwich?? having a Malay heart attack"

User Wora said: "Just you wait. I'll be cooking salmon head ala Temerloh tempoyak."

"I love petai but I hate the bathroom session later lol," another comment read.

"She mixed petai and avocado together...Oh God…thank god it's a sandwich and not a smoothie," user Prof Azfar wrote.

"As an Indonesian, I'm screaming in silence," user Chubby Hijabi wrote.

User poklongfaizsalHQ suggested that she could add budu (fermented fish sauce) to enhance the flavour.

"Maybe you can add a little bit of budu, mixed together with smashed avocado and chopped petai. It's full of flavours," he said.

One TikToker said that she would like to give the recipe a try.

"I actually have both petai and avocado in my fridge! So weird but I'm going to do this tomorrow," said user chizubunny.

User aidithemustachechonk said the same too: "Ohhh I'm so interested to try."

Expressing openness towards the new concept, user takocato said that if it tastes good, then why not go for it.

"It may seem unusual to us Malaysians, but if it tastes good, why not? I had an omelette with an apple sandwich as well as a pickled chilies sandwich during my college years. And it was so good."
