KUALA LUMPUR: A car salesman is stressed over a customer who wants to buy a Mercedes worth more than RM300,000 while earning only RM3,000 a month.
A viral post shared by @umar_othmann on Threads shows the poster's WhatsApp discussion with a netizen who wanted to buy an expensive white Mercedes priced at about RM312,000, despite his small income.
The car salesman requested details from the netizen and discovered that his basic salary was only RM1,500 per month, with a net income of RM3,000.
The salesman expressed his frustration with the buyer's unrealistic expectations regarding acquiring the vehicle.
"I'm frustrated with these young people just starting out in life. Their tastes are very extravagant, wanting to buy a car with monthly payments higher than their salary. This is what you have to deal with, and you have to keep your emotions in check when encountering people like that. sigh," he said in the post.
Netizens also agreed with the salesman's view.
@yatz_ijaz said "I earn around RM5,000 to 6,000 a month, and I'm even afraid to buy a car on loan. I just use what I can afford."
@mhashrinhashim said "if your salary is below RM5,000, there's no need to buy a continental car so just go for a Perodua or Proton. Now, if you're making RM12,000 a month, maybe then you can start considering these high-end cars.
User @sydqnfal said "even with that kind of salary, the thought of taking on debt is scary and it's true what they say, 'better broke but stylish'."
Another user @ziff71 added "my child, who earns RM2,500 a month and still lives with me, has been advised to buy a car under RM30,000, preferably second-hand, as long as he knows a reliable workshop and mechanic. It's all part of learning about car ownership."
@mhdnsr said "it's frightening to see their preferences nowadays, especially with the rising cost of living and how expensive things have become each month".
