#NSTviral: Hip new joint or bad neighbour? Porch cafe divides opinion

KUALA LUMPUR: A viral video of a husband-and-wife duo setting up a small cafe on the porch of their residential home has sparked mixed reactions online.

The clip shows the couple arranging kitchen counters, outdoor lounge chairs, and food and drink ingredients in what appears to be a landed property.

With the original video gaining more than 5,000 likes, the small business garnered praise for its clean and professional setup from netizens.

"Where is this? I love supporting people who are running or starting a business, especially when the setup is clean and has a professional look like this," commented user ciktips.

However, many, while supportive, also voiced concerns about its location.

"Mate, I support this effort, but a residential area is really not suitable for a business, especially when you have neighbours. It will disturb the privacy of the surrounding area," wrote user _m.s.a.j.

"Good effort, but wrong place. Kindly find a more suitable location before people in the area start lodging complaints," warned user its_nir.

Another, user dya_melankolia, added, "It's not about being envious or jealous, but running a business in a residential area doesn't seem appropriate... think about it—too many cars and motorbikes coming and going."

Some, however, encouraged the couple and pushed back against the criticism.

"I really enjoy seeing people running home-based businesses like this. Keep it up, mate... What matters is that it's clean and tidy—great job!" said user microorganic.

"If your neighbourhood is anything like mine, no one would mind at all. Plenty of people run businesses here, and there's no issue with cleanliness, disturbances, or anything else. In fact, some neighbours are regular customers," said user ziiraaah.

Offering a compromise, user ashleyeffa suggested: "Looks interesting. If your neighbours are coffee lovers, it might work. Maybe it's better to do takeaways and deliveries only."

Converting a portion of a residential home for commercial business such as a cafe without prior approval may be against the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 and local laws.
